Building a Safer Future Champion Awardee

Complete Technology Group (CTG) manages digital connectivity strategy, design, installation, and independent audit of fibre networks in multi-dwelling units (MDUs), working with over 20 Social Housing Landlords. Our services are free of charge to landlords and residents.

Our sister company, Complete Fibre, installs passive, full fibre infrastructure in MDUs, enabling multiple Internet Service Providers to ‘plug and play’, reducing the need for multiple installations and maintaining the structural integrity of MDUs. It ensures residents can access ultrafast broadband services from a choice of providers at a fair and competitive market rate. These services are also free to Landlords and residents.

Safety is and always has been part of our DNA, and we’re leading the sector.  There are over 5,000 companies in the telecoms space in the UK, and we’re thrilled to be the first to become a signatory to the Building a Safer Future Charter and be awarded BSF Champion status.

Our Journey So Far – What We’ve Learnt

While we know we have an excellent safety culture, we wanted landlords and telecom companies to know that our leadership, culture and processes have been independently verified and that building safety and risk reduction is embedded within our organisation.

Becoming a BSF Champion holds every one of our employees to account, from the CEO to the engineers on site. By taking the BSF journey and subsequently being listed as a BSF Champion, CTG is very clear that we put safety first every time.

The Building A Safer Future ethos completely aligns with our purpose and values. It’s a way to prove to the industry that we are committed to safety and walk that talk every day.

Becoming a BSF Champion was undoubtedly challenging, and we felt it was appropriate to dedicate a specific project team to ensure it received the focus, attention and drive needed and deserved.

It took six months for the project team to drive colleagues hard to ensure we could evidence that the way we do things reflects the correct policy and process. We had to ensure our colleagues knew the right thing to do, what shouldn’t happen and what to do if safety was inadvertently compromised.

Along the way, we identified where quality could be improved. The Project became quite personal for lots of people as they gained higher visibility and understanding of the role of safety in every department, irrespective of role – and ‘getting it right the first time’ is now a mantra for colleagues across the company.

As our journey continued, confidence in doing the right thing grew and with it, the transparency. People understood that by identifying risks, they had the opportunity to improve how we do things – and that really resonated with our teams.

One of the key takeaways from our journey, which truly resonated with us as a business, was to “celebrate the reds and question the greens”, which meant embracing the areas we needed to improve and strive for perfection and not rest on our laurels for the expectations that we met.

We have a clear vision and pathway to work towards via the continuous improvement plan provided by the BSF, and we will passionately look to deliver these actions as we continue our partnership with the BSF.

Suzy Nowlan (one of the BSF leads on the project team) said in relation to the BSF partnership:

“CTG was created in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy to preserve building integrity, and Dame Hackitt’s words encouraging businesses to lead their sector really resonated with me, which is one of the key reasons I joined CTG.

“Companies were, and still are, claiming that lessons had been learned, but I wanted to be part of a company that actively demonstrates how it’s doing better; not only that but one that gets the rest of the sector to do better too. That’s why we, as a business and I personally, are so passionate about our BSF Champion status”.

Andy Wells, Founder of CTG, said:

“Achieving BSF Champion status is a testament to how we operate as a business. But even though safety has always been at the forefront of everything we do, the journey with BSF has made us even better.

“The project team has worked tirelessly, engaging in searching and transparent dialogue which challenged our processes and policies across the whole operation. I believe it was one of the most valuable exercises we’ve undertaken. That said, achieving the BSF Champion status is not the end of the journey; it’s the start of another. The whole experience has highlighted that it’s about continuous improvement, something that everyone has embraced.

“I’m proud of our achievement and that we are leading the way in our sector. I appreciate the hard work of the team at CTG and hope others will follow the fine example they and the company have set.”
