Persimmon Homes Ltd

Building a Safer Future Champion Awardee

‘As one of the UK’s largest house builders, creating over 14,500 new homes a year, Persimmon is committed to the highest standards of construction and customer service, putting our customers at the very heart of all we do.

We were one of the first developers to embark on the BSF Champion assessment because we share BSF’s vision for construction quality and building safety. It is a simple fact that all developers have a duty to ensure the homes they build are as safe as they can be for people to live in.’

Our journey so far – what we’ve learnt

‘Persimmon has found the team within the BSF to be knowledgeable, supportive and insightful. They have helped us “turn a mirror” on our organisation so that we can identify and address areas for improvement. We are always seeking opportunities to strengthen our approach to building standards and safety and BSF’s scrutiny through the Champion assessment has helped drive further change and improvement.

We could also see value in how the criteria within the BSF Champion assessment are aligned with the recommendations made in Dame Judith Hackitt’s Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety. These themes for change have subsequently become core components within the new Building Safety Act. Therefore, by measuring our internal processes and policies against BSF’s mandatory expectations we are in a robust position to meet the requirements of the BSA.

In addition to addressing challenges right now, BSF also encourage continuous improvement at all levels of the business, and our involvement with the scheme is providing a forum for focused and sustained culture change and refinement of processes for the future.

Persimmon has recognised that when it comes to building safety, the right thing to do is be proactive and move from compliance to best practice, leading the way within the sector. We have seen real benefit from engaging with the BSF and we encourage other developers to do the same.’
